Report | Imports up but local production down

Licensed breweries across Canada have increased by nearly 108% over the last five years to 644 in 2015.

More than half of these breweries brew in Ontario and Québec, according to the latest Industry Trends report from Beer Canada.

Last year (2015) Canadians consumed 22,707,133hl of beer and although Canadian beer accounted for 84% (18,973,357hl) of this figure, this category has declined by 3.4% since 2010.

On small-pack sales, cans now hold a 54.7% share of the domestic packaged beer market while bottle sales dropped 4.3% to 35.4%.

The report added: “Domestic consumption of Canadian and imported beer in 2015 stood at 63.34 litres per person based on total population.

“At the provincial level, per capita consumption is highest in Newfoundland at 77.32 litres. Québec and Alberta have the second and third highest per capita consumption at 71.91 and 66.23 litres respectively.”
