Keeping Beer Inventory with Raspberry Pi

The New Orleans-based Raspberry Pi-powered home brewing monitoring system is known for being set up in a shed and now creator Patrick Murphy and his team have created a new invention.

Keg Punk is a simple inventory program designed for bars and breweries that helps keep up with what’s currently on tap along with what’s left in brewers’ cellars and how much owners have gone through.

Since the program is small with a simple interface, (Keg Punk is written in Python and is about 2500 lines of code) it runs on anything from Raspberry Pi Zero to Raspberry Pi 4.

Elements that brewers can take advantage of with this program are:

  • Add kegs of the latest batch or delivery to your cellar inventory
  • Interactive “Taproom” view shows your taps and what beer is attached to them
  • Put kegs “On Tap”, return them to the cellar, or mark as “Empty”
  • View statistics on the Reports tab. See what you have and what you have gone through
  • Allocate kegs to things other than draft pours (distribution, gift, waste…)
  • Customize the options to fit your bar, brewery, or home-brew set-up.

Raspberry Pi features a seven-inch screen and can be mounted discreetly close to workstations, so bartenders can quickly see how much stock is left without needing to go down to the cellar.

The touchscreen station is also home-brewer friendly and can easily be mounted to a kegerator and the tap display can be configured.

The three packages available for the program are:

  • Software Only (for Raspberry Pi)
  • Pre-Installed SD Card (for Raspberry Pi)
  • Keg Punk Taproom Package (touchscreen station for use behind the bar)
