First Canadian Brewery to be Powered by Solar Energy

About an hour outside of Ottawa, there is a brewery that is looking to hold the title of the utmost sustainability.  Arbru Solar Brewery, in Mallorytown, Ontario, runs entirely on Vitamin D’s rays to keep it operating, claiming that it is the first company in Canada to do so.

Phil Audet, owner of Arbru Solar Brewery in Mallorytown, Ontario

“I wanted to be able to prove to people that things have changed, that the technology is there,” said Phil Audet, owner.

A severe storm took out the majority of Ontario lines back in May, but the beer at Audet’s brewery kept on brewing and they helped people in the community.

“We’ve actually helped people to charge cell phones,” he said.

A trend is growing in the industry. A brewery in New Brunswick uses solar energy to supplement its power needs, with the eventual goal of achieving net-zero emissions.  Audet hopes his solar-powered suds will show other business owners the rewards of going green. Or, if anything, demonstrating that it’s possible.

“We can go off the grid and make it happen,” he said.
