World’s Largest Alcohol Producers Influence Manitoba Liquor Modernization, Lobby Records Show

According to lobby records, a number of the largest alcohol producers in the world have lobbied Manitoba PCs over the past three years on PCs “modernization” plans to boost private booze sales.

Regarding the PCs “modernization” plans to increase private liquor sales, lobbyists from Labatt, Diageo, and Molson Coors all documented lobbying engagements with Manitoba government officials.

Researchers who study alcohol policy have cautioned that increasing private liquor sales will have a detrimental influence on public health and put a strain on Manitoba’s healthcare system. To promote community benefits and preserve union employment, the Manitoba Government Employees’ Union has waged a fight against privatization.

One of the biggest makers of wine, liquor, and beer worldwide is Diageo. In order to “influence the introduction of a bill or resolution before the Legislative Assembly,” Diageo approached government officials, including Premier Heather Stefanson, many times a year, according to lobbying reports.
