A Brewery In Northern Ontario Is Seeking Public Support To Reduce Beer Tax

Craft brewers in Ontario are uniting to petition the provincial government to change the tax system, which they view as “unfair,” in order to alleviate their mounting operating expenses.

The Ontario Craft Brewers Association titled their campaign, “Keep Craft Beer Local,” earlier this year and invited people to sign a kind of petition and write letters to Ontario’s Minister of Finance, Peter Bethlenfalvy, as well as their local MPPs.

“We’re lucky in this province to be able to enjoy some of the best craft beer in the world – but something is threatening the future of our Ontario local craft breweries– they pay higher taxes than any other craft brewery in Canada,” reads an excerpt from the organization’s website.

“This is unfair, and it has already led to the forced closure of some breweries and the acquisition of others by foreign-owned, multinational corporations, depriving communities throughout the province of their beloved breweries and good local jobs.”

The Timmins Chamber wrote a letter to Bethlenfalvy and offered their assistance.
