How Women in China Are Embracing the Craft Beer Revolution

More women are taking on crucial positions in China’s billion-dollar craft beer industry, such as brewing, management, and bar operations.

When Kang Xingya had her first taste of craft beer, she was already 53 years old. Her initial taste in 2012 not only broadened her taste buds but also propelled her out of retirement and into China’s predominantly male craft beer sector.

Over the course of the following ten years, Kang developed her own craft beer company, Monkey King, into a successful enterprise that has a brewery, two retail locations, and more than a dozen distinctive beers. Additionally, Kang released “She,” an oolong tea-infused Saison beer, in honour of International Women’s Day on March 8 in partnership with Zhou Taiyang, another female brewer.

“The goal is to break stereotypes and encourage more women to appreciate craft beer,” the 64-year-old based in Guiyang in the southwestern Guizhou province tells Sixth Tone.
